Welcome

I welcome you to the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) and encourage you to explore our Web site.

We at UT Arlington have the oldest, largest and most diversified MSE program in North Texas. Our program is a university-wide, highly-interdisciplinary graduate program with 10 core materials faculty and ~30 affiliated faculty spanning from physics and chemistry to electrical, mechanical, aerospace, civil and bio engineering. This blend of faculty provides a stimulating environment for our 60-to-70 graduate students while embracing the opportunity to strengthen interdisciplinary programs and offer innovative curricula.

Our MSE department experienced a tremendous growth with five new hires over the last three years. We were successful in attracting some of the best faculty who enriched and further modernized our curriculum with new courses in nanotechnology, piezoelectric materials, magnetic and optical materials, bio nanomaterials and surface engineering and thin film

technology; all providing great educational opportunities to our students.

As we continue to grow, we maintain high levels of research funding from NSF, DOE, ONR, NASA, DOD and other federal, industrial and state sources in the areas of micro/nano electronic devices, self-assembled nanomaterials, multifunctional, nanocomposite thin films, piezoelectrics and energy harvesting, bio/nanomagnets, optoelectronics, solar cells and materials for clean energy, advanced lubricants, and plasma-enhanced materials processing. We maintain and constantly upgrade university-wide materials characterization facilities to facilitate research and provide hands on training to our students.

We are especially excited since in fall 2006 we celebrated the 40th anniversary of our MSE Program. Over the years, our program has produced well over 250 graduates who serve in key positions in industry, government and academia. A large number of our graduates serve in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, which has the largest concentration of high-tech industry in the State of Texas and is the second leading technopolis after silicon valley.

Enjoy your visit and please feel free to contact me for further information.
