Dr. Sean Atkinson
Assistant Professor of Music Theory

Sean Atkinson, Assistant Professor of Music Theory, received both Ph.D. And M.M. degrees in music theory from Florida State University. While at Florida State, he was nominated for the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award. He received a B.M. degree in both music theory and trombone performance from Furman University.
In addition to his teaching duites, Dr. Atkinson is an active researcher in the field of music theory, with presentations at Music Theory Southeast, the Music Theory Society of the Mid-Atlantic, the Association for Technology in Music Instruction, the Semiotic Society of America National Conference, the International Conference for Ph.D. Music Students, and the International Conference on Music and Minimalism. His work primarily explores recent music through various interdisciplinary approaches.
Dr. Atkinson currently serves on the executive board of the Texas Society of Music Theory and on the advisory board of Mosaic
, the graduate music journal for the University of Buffalo (SUNY). He also works as an editorial assistant for MTO
, a journal of the Society for Music Theory.
