The 34rd Annual UT Arlington Jazz Festival will be held on March 1, 2008 at James Bowie High School in Arlington, Texas. This year’s festival will feature last year’s format. In addition to competing for ratings, scores, and judges’ comments, each band will receive a separate 25 minute clinic with a feedback clinician. The evening awards concert will feature the Southlake Carroll Jazz Band II, UT Arlington Jazz Band II, and UT Arlington Jazz Orchestra with our guest artist, the Dan Cavanagh Big Band.
As the Assistant Director of Jazz Studies at UT Arlington, Dan Cavanagh teaches jazz composition and improvisation, directs the Jazz Ensemble and a jazz combo, and teaches various other jazz courses. He has garnered numerous awards for his compositions, including a First Music Commission from the New York Youth Symphony Jazz Band Classic program, and Finalist in the 2003 and 2005 ASCAP Young Jazz Composers competitions. His music continues to be performed across the country and internationally, and he has received commissions from a wide range of groups across North America. His compositions for large jazz ensemble are published by Walrus Music and UNC Jazz Press.
