In addition to the general academic requirements of the University, keyboard majors will have from four to eight semesters of private lessons on their instrument (according to the degree option chosen) in addition to a thorough training in music theory, ear training, and music history. The Performance, Performance with Pedagogy Emphasis, and Theory/Composition options prepare the student for work in graduate school and/or a career as a private instructor. Teacher Certification options can be attained with an emphasis in choral music or in instrumental music. All-level Certification prepares students for teaching at the elementary or secondary (junior and senior high) levels, and Secondary Certification prepares students for teaching at the secondary level only. Keyboard majors in the Jazz Studies option will be taught both classical technique and repertoire as well as jazz technique and repertoire. The Business, Media, or Theatre options are Bachelor of Music degrees with a 18-hour minor in business, media or theatre. Piano, organ, or harpsichord can be chosen a major instrument for these degree options as well. Each student receives individual career development and degree planning through the departmental advising program. To ensure successful completion of the degree program, students meet with an advisor each semester to plan their course of study.
