Master of Music in Music Education
Program Objective
The UTA Master of Music in Music Education curriculum is designed to facilitate successful teaching careers in music and encourage personal development. Through further education, music teachers will become more articulate, reflective practitioners so that they are able to select, adapt, adjust, and assess teaching and learning expectations.
Specific goals of the degree include:
- improving teaching skills through advanced coursework and research
- offering graduate courses to improve general musicianship, including performance, theory, and music history
- preparing students to enter graduate programs leading to the doctoral degree
- offering opportunities for advanced research in specialized areas
- providing professional enrichment for members of the community

Degree Requirements
Students enrolled in the Master of Music in Music Education program have two degree-plan options:
- Thesis Option: (30 semester hours total) 24 semester credit hours of coursework and a thesis, for which 6 semester hours are given. The final comprehensive examination will be comprised of an oral defense of the thesis and a written and oral exam based on coursework.
- Non-thesis Option: (36 semester hours total) 33 semester credit hours of coursework and a project for which 3 semester credit hours are given. The final comprehensive examination will be comprised of a written and oral exam covering the coursework and project. Graduate credit will be given for grades of A, B, and C for work done at the University of Texas at Arlington. For work completed at other institutions, graduate credit may be granted only for grades of A or B.
The student must maintain a B average in all graduate courses.
