Audition Music

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Technical piece: a solo or etude that would demonstrate the ability to play difficult passages at a fast tempo.

Lyrical piece: a slower piece in which beauty of tone, phrasing, and interpretation are demonstrated.

BRASS AND WOODWIND

Choose music from the representative solo repertoire for your instrument. The music should demonstrate your performance ability in both lyrical and technical styles.

JAZZ

Two pieces of contrasting styles (lyrical and technical) and a third piece of your own choice. At least one piece of the three should be in a swing style. Improvisation is also preferred but not required.

KEYBOARD

Piano - Three pieces of contrasting styles (e.g., Baroque, Classical, Romantic, or 20c), with at least two memorized. You will also be asked to sight read and
play scales.
Organ - Two pieces of contrasting styles.
Harpsichord -Two pieces of contrasting styles.

PERCUSSION

Perform music of your choice on three different instruments, preferably snare drum, marimba, and timpani. Instruments will be furnished at the audition site; however, you should bring all necessary sticks and mallets.

STRINGS

The audition should consist of a movement from a concerto or sonata, and an etude (or two contrasting movements from a sonata) of your own choosing. However, please select music that will demonstrate your performance ability in both lyrical and technical styles.

VOICE
The audition should consist of two contrasting songs or arias of your own choosing, at least one of which should be in English. You may use music. No taped accompaniments.
