• Department of Music Admissions
It is recommended that the student complete the audition process before
May 15th for the Fall Semester and November 15th for the Spring Semester.
Late registrants must audition for the principal teacher
before the end of the late registration process (the end of the first
week of classes) in order to be accepted into lessons during the student's
first semester. Students will be placed into the appropriate semester
based on their audition regardless of applied credit earned at other institutions.
Students who transfer in more than four semesters of applied lessons,
or are placed in the fifth semester of study, will be expected to complete
the UTA Applied Proficiency Exam requirements during their first semester
of applied study.
Students must perform solo(s) or etude(s) repertoire that demonstrates
technical proficiency and musicianship. The candidates will be evaluated
based on the following criteria: a) musical potential, b) technical competence,
c) style and interpretation, d) repertoire. Students are encouraged to
perform a live on-campus audition, however, a video recording may be substituted
under special circumstances.
Auditions at the departmental scholarship
audition day will fulfill this requirement.
• Basic Music Skills
In order to be fully admitted as a music major the student is expected
to possess a basic understanding of music theory. All transfer students
must take a theory diagnostic exam. Results of the exam will be used to
recommend an appropriate level of Theory.
Note: At the discretion of the music faculty, students may be
admitted to the department provisionally for one semester.
