Audition Information 2009

The purpose of the audition is to determine seating placement in the cello orchestra and to create balanced and level appropriate small cello ensembles. This is not intended to be a high-pressure situation – however, it is how we gather information so that you will have the best possible experience. Please practice these excerpts carefully, with special attention to rhythms and metronome markings.

There are two excerpts categories possible – you only need prepare one of the categories.

Please choose the category that best represents your playing level:

CATEGORY I (for less experienced players)

Excerpt #1: DMO, Cello 4, Mvt. I, measures 1-28.

Excerpt #2: DMO, Cello 4, Mvt. III, measures 1-23 and measures 27-43.

* Also required: Scales: 2 or 3 octave (depending on your skill level) D minor and A Major

CATEGORY II (for more experienced players)

If you wish to be considered for one of the top positions in the cello orchestra or for
placement in an advanced ensemble, please choose this category.

Excerpt #3: DMO, Cello I, Mvt. I, measure 1-28.

Excerpt #4: DMO, Cello I, Mvt. III, measures 5-23.

Excerpt #5 (optional): Vivaldi, Cello I, measures 89-138 Excerpt #5 is optional for
those students wishing to audition to play the solo part in the Vivaldi.

*Also required: 3 octave D Minor and A Major Scales.

In the excerpts, you may play any fingerings you like – however, please play the bowings in the parts. The auditions will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday evening, August 2 after Orientation. There will be a place to warm up. If you need to schedule a specific time to audition, please contact me in advance. If for some reason you cannot be available for the audition, please let me know.
