Prior to joining UT Arlington, Herb was a senior reporter for The Dallas Morning News and its subsidiaries. He has reported or edited coverage about various cities, school districts, elections, businesses, sports, and general interest for The Dallas Morning News, Arlington Morning News, Grand Prairie News, Garland News, and Richardson News. While at the News, he and two other reporters earned the 2004 Fred M. Hechinger Grand Prize for Distinguished Education Reporting. He still writes a general interest, Sunday column about Grand Prairie for the News. Before the News, Herb served in various capacities for the Herald-News, a suburban weekly for communities near San Antonio. He also has worked in technology for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. He received a bachelor of journalism degree from The University of Texas at Austin. He lives in Grand Prairie.
