Solar help

UTA chemists have developed new high-performing materials for cells that harness sunlight to split carbon dioxide and water into useable fuels like methanol and hydrogen gas, Phys.org, Science Newsline, Science Codex, sci24h.com and many other websites reported. These "green fuels" can be used to power cars, home appliances or even to store energy in batteries.

Turnout records

Tarrant County Republicans shattered their turnout records Tuesday as early voting kicked off for the March 1 presidential primaries in Texas, the Star-Telegram reported. Allan Saxe, UTA associate professor of political science, said there are some big personalities in the Republican Primary just like there were for the Democrats in 2008.

Tops in transfers

UTA placed third on U.S. News & World Report's top 10 list of colleges that attract the most transfer students. The list showed that UTA had nearly 5,700 transfer students in the fall of 2014.

Engineer praised

A Star-Telegram editorial lauded Jim Nichols, who guided engineering firm Freese and Nichols through a period of tremendous growth. Nichols, an advisor to the UTA College of Engineering, died Thursday at 92.

WNBA star comes home

Odyssey Sims, a WNBA Dallas Wings star, visited her alma mater, Irving MacArthur High School, The Dallas Morning News reported. Sims and the Wings will play this year at their new home court at UTA's College Park Center.

MOOC fee

Some are condemning the recent decision of some colleges to begin charging a fee for massive open online courses or MOOCs, The Cite reported. George Siemens of UTA's Learning Innovation and Networked Knowledge Research Lab said, “The deep pool of visionary and re-architected future ended up being about as thick as a dollar bill.”

New cancer detection

Samir Iqbal, a University of Texas at Arlington electrical engineer, has developed a novel cancer cell detection method that will improve early diagnosis through a tool that tracks cellular behavior in real time using nanotextured walls that mimic layers of body tissue, i4u.com, brandyscynario.com, Pakistani News, The News Tribe, Dawn.com and several other websites reported.
