The 2023-24 season for Maverick men’s and women’s basketball promises to be exciting, with plenty of new talent ready to round out our Maverick excellence.

Taking on his first stint as head coach, KT Turner plans to capitalize on the momentum the team carried into the end of last season, when it closed with a strong showing against Grand Canyon University in tournament play. This year, the team is tackling a 20-game conference docket, which has them playing 10 other Western Athletic Conference (WAC) schools twice during the regular season. Defending WAC champs Utah Valley will be UTA’s first home opponent in 2024.

“We want to win the conference,” Turner says. “We want to get to the NCAA tournament. Our goals are set high.”

Shereka Wright, head coach for women’s basketball, says that with 12 new players on the roster, she’s focused on helping facilitate and build team chemistry.

“It will be important for us to establish culture and roles early for our roster,” she says. “This season should be very exciting. We have a very talented and diverse roster full of student-athletes who are skilled inside and outside.”

Wright cites three Division I transfers—Avery Brittingham, Taliyah Clark, and Gia Adams—who will bring invaluable skill and experience as the team takes shape.

“We want to compete at a high level and play with intensity,” she says. “Our goal is to win the conference and make it back to the NCAA Tournament, and I feel like we have the potential to do that.”
