Homecoming 2008 kicks-off with spirit competition

Induction into the Military Hall of Honor, spirit competitions, a fashion show, chili cook-off and basketball game with the crowning of a king and queen are just some of the highlights of Homecoming 2008 at The University of Texas at Arlington.

Activities begin Monday, Feb. 11, and continue until Saturday, Feb. 16.

Some events include (but are not limited to):

Paint your car with Pride
Monday, Feb. 11, noon to 3 p.m.
Arlington Hall and Greek Row parking lots
A newer campus tradition in which faculty, staff and students paint their cars to help kick-off Homecoming week.

Homecoming Step Show
Tuesday, Feb. 12, 7 p.m.
Texas Hall, 701 W. Nedderman Drive
More than just walking or dancing, “stepping” is based on traditional black song and dance rituals and largely developed in black sororities and fraternities as a way of expressing pride and unity. Sponsored by Multicultural Affairs and the Homecoming Committee.

Blue & White Fashion Show and Pep Rally
Wednesday, Feb. 13, noon
Palo Duro Lounge, E. H. Hereford University Center, 300 W. First St.
The Blue & White Fashion show sponsored by EXCEL Campus Activities is a Homecoming tradition. Participants are encouraged to dress up in their organization’s most spirited and fun. The most festive and unique groups to walk down the runway will receive the most Spirit Points from the judges. Download the entry form: http://www.uta.edu/homecoming. The show this year will also take place along side a pep rally.

Women’s Basketball: UT Arlington hosts Lamar University
Thursday, Feb. 14, 7 p.m.
Texas Hall, 701 W. Nedderman Drive
Introduction of the Homecoming Court will be made at the game.

Golf Cart Parade
Friday, Feb. 15, noon
University Center, 300 W. First St.; and Library Mall, 702 Planetarium Place
Judges will award spirit points based upon the design and theme of golf cart floats.

Military Science Hall of Honor Ceremony & Reception
Saturday, Feb. 16, 10 a.m.
Rosebud Theatre & Palo Duro Lounge, E. H. Hereford University Center, 300 W. First St.
Alumni Robert W. Irish Jr. and Col. (Ret.) Thomas A. Schneider will be inducted.

Men’s Basketball: UT Arlington hosts McNeese State
Saturday, Feb. 16, 4 p.m.
Texas Hall, 701 W. Nedderman Drive
At halftime, the coronation ceremony and crowning of the homecoming king and queen will take place.

Other activities include alumni tours, the Deans’ Breakfast, Blue and White Bash and the fourth annual Homecoming Chili Cook-off. A complete schedule of Homecoming events can be found at http://www.uta.edu/stuact/homecoming/.
