ARLINGTON - The University of Texas at Arlington and Theatre Arlington have merged their talent and resources to produce “Working,” a musical based on Studs Terkel’s 1972 best-selling book of interviews with ordinary American workers. The musical is a celebration of the “anonymous many;” their hopes, dreams and concerns. Terkel’s inspiring and eye-opening work was adapted into a musical by Stephen Schwartz and Nina Faso, with songs by James Taylor, Stephen Schwartz, Mary Rodgers and Susan Birkenhead, Micki Grant and Craig Carnelia.
The show, a first-ever production partnership for the two theater programs, runs from March 28 to April 27 at Theatre Arlington, 305 W. Main St. Directed by B.J. Cleveland, who is a UT Arlington alumnus and adjunct professor, the cast and production crew includes UT Arlington students, faculty, alumni and one retired faculty member.
UT Arlington students in the cast include Clarissa Betts, Andras Bodolai, Clare Boyd, Chris Cox, Lyssa Dennis and Jill Deramus. Also in the cast, Matt Greven, Mary Jerome, Lacy Lambert, Chase Mitchell and Jason Villareal. Retired professor Dorothy Lynn Brooks is in the cast, along with alumnus Eugene Chandler.
Musical direction is by Mark Miller, accompanist for UT Arlington musical theater classes, and set design is by faculty member Michelle Harvey. Lighting design is by faculty member Adam Mendelson and student Afton Trotter is the costume designer. David Navalinsky of the faculty and Ana Pettit of Theatre Arlington are in charge of technical direction.
Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays.
Tickets are $20. “Student Rush” tickets will be $5 at the door, pending ticket availability. UT Arlington faculty and staff can receive a $3 discount by mentioning the affiliation when making reservations and showing ID when picking up tickets.
