New RN Graduates: Closing the Gap between Education and Practice

ARLINGTON - The North Texas Consortium of Schools of Nursing in collaboration with area hospitals has developed patient care teaching/learning modules to share with schools of nursing in Texas. These modules are based on high risk/high volume patient diagnoses likely to be encountered in nursing practice. The goal is to increase patient safety as well as the clinical competence and confidence of new nurses graduating from initial licensure programs in the state. The modules are created by nursing school faculty and hospital-based educators using a variety of teaching methods including some designed for use with high fidelity simulation manikins.

According to Elizabeth Poster, Dean, The University of Texas at Arlington School of Nursing “The development of educational materials by nursing faculty and hospital nursing staff working together is a model for the future to ensure that students develop their “clinical thinking” skills to promote excellence in practice. This work would not have been possible without the work and commitment of the schools of nursing and hospital partners, since it was done without grant funding over a 3 year time frame.”

Tricia Scott, RN, MS, FACHE, Division Director for Workforce Development at HCA North Texas Region, notes that “this will be a great tool to help the nursing student assimilate what they have learned and problem solve to keep patients safe.”

The North Texas schools of nursing and their module area included: Collin Community College District “AMI”; El Centro College, “Cerebral Vascular Accident”; Grayson Community College, “Diabetic Ketoacidosis”; North Central Texas College, “Shock”; Southwest Adventist University, “Deep Vein Thrombosis”; Tarrant County Community College, “Psychosis”; Texas Christian University, “Altered Level of Consciousness”; Texas Woman’s University, “Respiratory Disorders”; The University of Texas at Arlington, “Congestive Heart Failure”; Trinity Valley Community College, “Post-op Pain.”

Area hospitals participating as Practice Partners: Arlington Memorial Hospital; Baylor Health Care System; Children’s Medical Center- Dallas; Harris Methodist Fort Worth; Hospital Corporation of America-North Texas Division; John Peter Smith Health System; Kaufman Lake Pointe Medical Center; Medical Center of Plano; Medical Center at Terrell; Parkland Health and Hospital System; Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas; Texas Health Resources; Texoma Health Care Systems; Wilson N. Jones Medical Center.
