Region VI to hold OSHA Oil and Gas Safety Conference in Houston

ARLINGTON - The newest Region VI Occupational Safety and Health Administration Education Center, located at The University of Texas at Arlington, will conduct its first conference aimed at addressing issues and trends in safety in the oil and gas industry. The OSHA Oil and Gas Safety Conference, to be held in Houston, Dec. 2-3, will convene industry leaders, safety professionals and OSHA representatives to discuss and learn more about the most critical topics affecting the safety of workers in the industry.

The two-day conference, sponsored by industry leaders BP, ConocoPhillips, Devon Energy, ExxonMobil, ISNetworld and OSHA, will provide a forum to launch a new cooperation in networking and the sharing of best practices among 750 oil and gas safety practitioners.

"This conference is the first of its kind in the nation.  This public/private partnership between UT Arlington, industry, OSHA and other regulatory agencies is leading the way to ensuring safe and effective operations in the Oil and Gas Industry," said Lisa London, director of the UT Arlington OSHA Education Center. "Attendees are coming from all over the nation and Canada and Mexico."

UT Arlington speakers include T L Peters, speaking on safety research, and Jerry Henderson, speaking on safety leadership. Opening remarks will be made by John Hall, UT Arlington vice president for administration and campus operations. Other conference speakers include Dean McDaniel, OSHA regional administrator; E. Scott Geller, internationally renowned safety professional and author; John Drebinger, a safety communication expert; Charlie Morecraft, a motivational safety speaker; and Bum Phillips, former Houston Oiler and New Orleans Saints head coach.

The OSHA Oil & Gas Safety Conference will feature a series of 36 sessions presented by leading engineers and industry professionals from around the world. Topics will include: Excellence Through Culture-Based Safety, Integrated Risk Management Enhancements, The OSHA Inspection Process, Incident Trends for Land Drilling and a panel discussion on The Future of Health and Safety in Exploration and Production.

Additional sessions will facilitate discussion on safety, risk management, fall protection, contractor management, accident investigations, emergency response and other topics, trends and technologies affecting today's oil and gas industry.
