ARLINGTON - The University of Texas at Arlington will offer new job search groups to help alumni who are looking for employment.
Three separate groups will meet twice each month to discuss ways to find jobs, land an interview and, ultimately, the job.
Cheri Butler, associate director of career services, and several staff members will lead the groups. Butler formed similar groups during the 1990s recession when she worked for an outplacement firm.
The groups aim to provide members moral support, allow them to share leads and enable members to discover job openings through networking. The groups set weekly targets for the number of resumes sent and interviews scheduled, and it holds members accountable for meeting those goals.
"The groups are successful in keeping people accountable, and they're good support groups," Butler said.
Alumni job seekers may need to brush up on their resume and interview skills, said Barbara Peet, UT Arlington's director of career services.
"For many, the styles of interviews and resumes have changed since they last applied for a job," she said.
Networking will be emphasized, including social media networks such as LinkedIn and the UT Arlington Alumni Association.
Upcoming group meetings are scheduled for:
- 9 a.m. Fridays, April 3 and 17, Room F200L, Workforce Development Center, Continuing Education Building, 140 W. Mitchell St.
- 4 p.m. Thursdays, April 9 and 23, Room 216, E.E. Davis Hall, 701 S. Nedderman Drive.
- Noon, Tuesdays, April 14 and 28, second floor conference room, UT Arlington Fort Worth Center, 1401 Jones St., Fort Worth.
