ARLINGTON - Area residents are invited to roll up their sleeves and join students, faculty and staff from The University of Texas at Arlington in a massive, one-day community volunteer effort billed as The Big Event.
More volunteers are needed to fill all spots for the 39 activities in and around Arlington on Saturday, April 11.
UTA Volunteers, a student organization, coordinates The Big Event. The Big Event is the University's way of giving back to the community through volunteer activities.
"We have projects for 800 people, and we have 600 people registered," said P.K. Kelly, director of student activities at UT Arlington.
Saturday's volunteers will build, clean, decorate, paint, plant, mulch, compost and entertain. Their efforts will help individuals, families, schools, parks and the environment through organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club, Girls Inc., Mission Arlington and the Salvation Army, as well as the city of Arlington and the University.
One project has students cleaning old cabins and a schoolhouse at Knapp Heritage Park on Front Street in downtown Arlington. The park is operated by the Arlington Historical Society.
Geraldine Mills, director of the Arlington Historical Society, said her organization's trustees most often care for the cabins and schoolhouse or hire help. The Big Event "gives those students a chance to see what we do, and we all benefit," Mills said.
Volunteers are encouraged to register in advance, but last-minute helpers are welcome, too. On Saturday, new volunteers can pick up assignments at the Student Activities office on the lower level of the E.H. Hereford University Center, 300 W. First St.
The Salvation Army will provide breakfast from 6:45 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. for Big Event volunteers. A Thank You luncheon is scheduled from noon until 2 p.m. with entertainment at the E.H. Hereford University Center.
