ARLINGTON - Randy Snow, a legendary paralympian and 1986 graduate of The University of Texas at Arlington, is scheduled to give the keynote speech at the Barbara Jordan Media Awards Luncheon on Friday, June 12, at the new Cowboys Stadium.
The event is sponsored by the Texas Governor's Committee on People with Disabilities, the Arlington Mayor's Committee on People with Disabilities and UT Arlington. The awards recognize individuals and organizations for eliminating attitudinal, social and physical barriers, and for encouraging accurate, respectful and progressive portrayals of people with disabilities.
Snow, 48, became the first paralympian inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 2004. He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from UT Arlington in 1986 and won Paralympic medals in three sports. Read more about Snow in the fall 2004 issue of UT Arlington magazine.
Four Barbara Jordan Media Award winners will be recognized at the luncheon. ABC affiliate WFAA-TV in Dallas will be honored for a story on the Miracle League in Arlington, which allows children with disabilities to play baseball. Other winners include Texas Country Reporter, Scottish Rite Learning Center of Austin, Pam LaBlanc of the Austin American-Statesman and Tracy Idell Hamilton of the San Antonio Express-News.
The statewide award is named in honor of the late Barbara Jordan, who had multiple sclerosis and championed the causes of the disabled as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1973 to 1979.
