ARLINGTON - Meghna Tare has been named the first director of sustainability for The University of Texas at Arlington. Her appointment was effective Jan. 4.

Tare holds a master's degree in environmental studies from San Jose State University in California and a master's degree in chemistry from the University of San Francisco. She was an environmental manager with the city of Dallas' Office of Environmental Quality for the past three years and has taught environmental studies at California State University at Hayward and worked at Stanford University with the Institute of Environmental Science and Policy.

"Tare has a very broad range of knowledge, experience and success in leading and implementing sustainability programs and initiatives," said John Hall, vice president for administration and campus operations.

UT Arlington is committed to environmental stewardship, addressing energy and water conservation, construction, transportation and recycling, Hall said. It was the first educational entity to partner with Air North Texas, a regional clean air campaign initiated by the North Central Texas Council of Governments.

The University's sustainability efforts have been led by the volunteers appointed to the President's Sustainability Committee.

"Under Tare's leadership, and with the support of the Sustainability Committee, I fully expect UT Arlington to become a leader in university and college sustainability programs in the region, the state and the nation," Hall said.

Tare administered numerous projects for Dallas, but said she looks forward to the University's broader mission. Her duties include initiating and coordinating programs in utility efficiency and management, carbon foot print reduction, recycling and waste reduction, transportation, environmentally preferable purchasing and much more. The campus environment also brings unique challenges.

"More and more prospective students look at the University's sustainability record before applying and I will strive to make UT Arlington a role model," she said. "I know the sustainability program has a significant impact on the entire community, as well as students."
