Kalpana Chawla display dedicated at Nedderman Hall
ARLINGTON - Engineering students at The University of Texas at Arlington have a new source of inspiration in their daily walks through Nedderman Hall.
Harrison donated items for the Chawla display
The Kalpana Chawla Memorial was dedicated May 3 in Nedderman Hall, one of the primary buildings in UT Arlington's College of Engineering.
Chawla was one of the University's most celebrated graduates. She earned her master's of science degree in aerospace engineering from UT Arlington in 1984 before becoming an astronaut. She was aboard the Columbia Space Shuttle when it broke apart during re-entry in February 2003.
The display includes one of Chawla's flight suits, several photographs, and historical and biographical information about her and the space program. Also included in the display is a flag flown over Johnson Space Center during the memorial for the fallen astronauts from the Columbia disaster. Jean-Pierre Harrison, Chawla's husband, donated the items.
Astronauts Janet Kavandi and Dominic Gorie, both colleagues of Chawla, described Chawla as one of the "best friends they ever had" during the dedication. Harrison said his wife would be happy to know that she is an example and an inspiration to others.
About 250 Air Force Junior ROTC cadets from Arlington school district also attended the display's dedication.
