Sally Ride invites girls to explore hands-on science at UT Arlington
ARLINGTON - A street fair filled with hands-on exhibits, workshops with local scientists and an appearance by astronaut Barbara Morgan will all be part of the Sally Ride Science Festival Oct. 30 at The University of Texas at Arlington. The event, presented by ExxonMobil and Sally Ride Science, is one of several held each year across the country to bring science to life and inspire upper elementary and middle school girls to think about the vast range of careers in science.
"We are extremely excited and pleased that the Sally Ride Science Festival has chosen to partner with The University of Texas at Arlington," said Pamela Jansma, dean of the UT Arlington College of Science. "The opportunity to generate interest in science among girls is always important and we're proud to be part of that effort."
The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Highlights of the day's activities include:
- Discovery workshops for students given by local scientists and engineers, as well as workshops for parents and teachers on ways to support students' interests in science and math.
- An inspiring talk by astronaut Barbara Morgan, an American teacher that participated in the Teacher in Space program and flew as a Mission Specialist aboard STS-118 in 2007.
- A street fair with hands-on activities, booths, and music.
"We are proud to continue our partnership with Sally Ride Science and UTA to bring North Texas students exciting opportunities to explore science," said Suzanne McCarron, president, ExxonMobil Foundation. "Through initiatives like the Sally Ride Science Festival, we hope to show girls that science is a fun and exciting discipline, which offers a multitude of options for future study and careers."
A $20 advanced registration fee includes the featured talk, workshops, lunch and the street fair. Advance registration is required. Additional sponsorship generously provided by Time Warner Cable and Texas Instruments.
