Scott Ryan, dean of The
University of Texas at Arlington School of Social Work, was named an American
Council on Education fellow this week, the ACE Fellows Program announced.
Ryan was nominated by President
James D. Spaniolo for the program and joins 56 other fellows for the 2012-13
“I am honored by President Spaniolo’s nomination and for the invitation from the ACE Fellows Program,” said Ryan, who is UT Arlington’s Jenkins Garrett Professor in the School of Social Work. “I especially look forward to spending the next academic year working with the leadership at host universities to learn about issues President Spaniolo and I will identify this summer.”
The ACE Fellows Program was established in 1965 and is designed to strengthen institutions and leadership in American higher education by identifying and preparing promising senior faculty and administrators for senior positions in college and university administration.
John Buckwalter, associate dean for research and graduate studies in UT Arlington’s College of Education has been assigned to Texas Christian University this year as an ACE fellow.
Sharon A. McDade, Ed.D., director of the ACE Fellows Program, noted that most previous fellows have advanced into major positions in academic administration. Of the more than 1,700 participants in the first 47 years of the program, more than 300 have become chief executive officers and more than 1,100 have become provosts, vice presidents or deans.
“We’re extremely pleased with the strength of the incoming class,” McDade said. “The Fellows Program will sharpen and enhance their leadership skills and their network, and prepare them to address issues of concern to the higher education community.”
ACE is the major coordinating body for the nation’s colleges and universities, and advocates on higher-education issues in Washington and around the world.
