A: UT Arlington’s commitment to our 180,000 alumni is stronger than ever and will continue to grow. In addition to ongoing activities, the University is continuing to build mechanisms to further support and engage alumni. The University also is currently seeking a new Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations. Among the responsibilities of this senior executive position will be creating a comprehensive Alumni Relations program within the Office of Development. The program will focus on engaging alumni of all ages and backgrounds and engendering alumni service and financial support to the University.

Q: Will the University honor benefits previously extended to current members of the UT Arlington Alumni Association, alumni chapters and alumni groups if the organization ceases operations or dissolves?
A: UT Arlington will continue to work diligently to engage all alumni and alumni groups in the life of the University.
The University will honor all benefits previously extended to those who have paid for memberships in the association, including Life members, regardless of the status of the organization. All Association members may continue to present their valid membership cards to the UT Arlington Library, the Maverick Activities Center and the UT Arlington Parking and Transportation Services office in the J.D. Wetsel Building to access benefits extended through the expiration date on their card.
Q: Will traditions and events supported by the UT Arlington Association continue?
A: Absolutely. Plans are already under way for the Distinguished Alumni Awards and Gala. The University also will continue to support the annual Oozeball Mud Volleyball Tournament, Homecoming alumni receptions and other events that bring alumni together on campus and around the world to engage them in the University’s academic and research mission and to further build close relationships with all alumni.
Q: Has the University continued to support the Alumni Association financially?
A: Yes. Under a transitional agreement effective Oct. 1, 2013, the University has continued to cover Alumni Association expenses related to operational costs and programming costs associated with fall events such as the Alumni Awards and Gala, the Oozeball tournament and other alumni gatherings. The University has covered about $120,000 in expenses for the association so far this fiscal year and, in addition, has funded numerous receptions and gatherings focused on alumni.
Additionally, the University has continued to pay the Association a monthly fee of $888 to lease space for annual Telefund operations. The University also has dispersed about $16,000 in interest earnings to the Association from the Alumni Association Life Member Endowment.
Under a previous operating agreement that was updated annually, the University provided the Alumni Association financial support to assist with employee benefits and other human resources administration. The University’s initial 2013-2014 budget identified $183,250 in annual support to the Alumni Association before the agreement was revised in October 2013.
UT System’s Office of General Counsel advised UT Arlington in 2013 that the financial arrangement was not consistent with best practices for a public university and a separate 501(c)(3) organization. In October 2013, the association assumed responsibility for all employee-related costs. The Association has said that its membership levels and revenues are not sufficient to sustain its business model.
