NSF grant to advance engineering professor's sign language recognition system
Vassilis Athitsos, an assistant professor in computer science and engineering at The University of Texas at Arlington, has received a five-year, $513,000 National Science Foundation Early Career Development grant. The grant will fund continuing work on computer vision technology that will eventually lead to a sign lookup system, which will allow sign language users to look up the meaning of signs in comprehensive dictionaries of American Sign Language.

Associate dean gains national attention as part of defibrillation research team
A UT Arlington associate nursing dean is co-author of a new, nationally-noted paper that raises questions about the effectiveness of in-hospital use of automated external defibrillators, or AEDs. The findings from the research team that included UT Arlington professor Beth Mancini and other researchers say that while AEDs improve survival for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, similar use in a hospital setting does not lead to an improved rate of survival. The work is published in the Nov. 17, 2010 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, and is available online.

UT Arlington, Hertz offer students more sustainable transportation options
The University of Texas at Arlington is offering students an Earth-friendly option for getting around town this fall by becoming part of a unique nationwide car sharing program. Connect by Hertz is a pay-as-you-go car membership club. Students or faculty will pay as little as $8 an hour or $62 a day to use one of two cars parked at conveniently located lots on campus. The cost includes gas, insurance, 24-hour roadside assistance, gps navigation and other features.
