Health Nurse Practitioner
(PMHNP) |
The Psychiatric-Mental
Health Nurse Practitioner Program prepares advanced practice nurses as primary
mental health care providers for individuals and families. Focus is on mental
health care through the lifespan, with a sub-specialty available in child/adolescent
psychiatry or adult/gerontological psychiatry. Graduates are prepared to
be recognized as Advanced Practice Nurses by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners
and to take either the Family Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Exam or the
Adult Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Exam offered by the American
Nurses Credentialing Center.

This program provides you a background to: |
- Apply neurobiological and psychosocial theories and use
pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies in the provision of mental health care.
- Assume responsibility as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse
Practitioner to provide compassionate and collaborative mental health care for clients and
families.
- Demonstrate clinical expertise in health promotion, illness
prevention, and treatment of mental health and addictive disorders.
- Use research to explore outcomes of Psychiatric Mental Health
Nurse Practitioner practice.
