As a distinguished nursing leader, Ms. Ferguson held the highest
nursing administration position in the Department of Veterans Affairs for twelve years
(1980 - 1992). In this post, she was responsible for the largest nursing service in the
world with more than 60,000 nursing personnel. Prior positions include Chief Nurse at two
Veterans Administration Medical Centers affiliated with the universities and Chief of the
Nursing Department, Clinical Center, The National Institutes of Health.Ms.
Ferguson has provided lectures and major addresses in every region of the United States
and nine foreign countries. She is a Past President of the American Academy of Nursing,
Sigma Theta Tau International and The International Society of Nurses in Cancer Care. Ms.
Ferguson is a Fellow in the Royal College of Nursing in the United Kingdom, the second
American nurse so honored following the late Virginia Henderson. Most recently she
received the American Academy of Nursing 1998 Living Legend Award. Ms Ferguson is also
known for her warmth, humanity, vision and dynamism.

| The Vernice D. Ferguson Leadership Research Fund The Vernice D. Ferguson Leadership Research
Fund honors this exceptional, internationally recognized nurse leader. Education,
administration and research have been cornerstones of her career both in government and
academia. This fund will support research to add to the scientific body of knowledge in
creative and contemporary leadership in nursing practice, education and administration.

| The Virginia B. Longest Lectureship The Virginia B. Longest Lectureship honors
her distinguished career as a leader. Far ahead of her times in the 1970s, she
served as an executive woman in government and as the national Director of Veterans
Administration Nursing Service. In keeping with her vision as a leader, this Lectureship
will promote the acquisition of leadership knowledge and the development of leadership
skills among professional nurses and health care providers. |
