Nancy Burns

Jenkins Garrett Professor

I have been with the UTA School of Nursing since 1974. My clinical area of interest has been cancer and care of the dying. I wrote one of the first textbooks on cancer nursing, Nursing and Cancer, in 1981. I was the first nurse researcher to be funded by the American Cancer Society. I developed the first hospice in this area and conducted research on hospice care for 10 years with a health economist, Kim Carney. I am probably best known for the research textbooks written by myself and Susan Grove: The Practice of Nursing Research (now in its 4th edition), and Understanding Nursing Research. My focus in life is helping people become what they are capable of becoming - reach toward their potential: family members, colleagues, students.
