MSN STUDENT HANDBOOK
COMPLETION OPTIONS

All students enrolled in the Master of Science in Nursing Program must complete one of the following Completion Options:  1)  Comprehensive Exam, 2)  Masters Completion Project, or 3)  Thesis.

  Comprehensive Exams

A written comprehensive examination is one of the non-thesis methods for completing the MSN at UTA.  The comprehensive exam involves two essay examinations:  one over the core (theory, research, and issues) taken the semester prior to graduation and another exam over the clinical major and advanced role taken the semester scheduled for graduation. Students will be provided direction in preparation for both the core and the clinical major and advanced role exams.  Core faculty will prepare students for the Core Exam and to receive this preparation and to take the core exam, students must enroll in a 1 hour Independent Study (N5170 or N5192).   The Directors of the Administration and Nurse Practitioner Programs will provide instruction to prepare students for the clinical major and advanced role exam.  A grade of pass (P) or fail (F) will be given.  Students will be notified of their grade by mail.  Click on this link to download the Comprehensive Exam Preparation Packet which contains study guidelines needed for preparation in taking the comprehensive exam.

In the event of comprehensive exam failure:

1.  Students must meet with a professor in the area(s) that they failed and then make arrangements to repeat the exam(s).

2.  Upon failure to pass the retake examination, the student will be required to register the following semester for a one hour independent study with their major professor and retake the total comprehensive examination (both core and clinical major/role).

3.  A failure of any area in the retake of the total comprehensive examination results in failure from the MSN program.

  Masters Completion
     Project

A Master's Completion Project (MCP) is another non-thesis method for completing the MSN at UTA.  The MCP involves enrolling for a total of 4 credit hours  of independent study (180 contact hours) over two semesters and participating in a faculty research project with the end result of a publishable paper.
