| Labor &
Delivery Suite The Labor and
Delivery Recovery and Post-Partum suites are occupied by 4 manikins – 2
mothers and 2 newborns. One of these manikins, Noelle, has a mechanical
system that can simulate the birthing process including delivery of a
baby. The LDRP Suite includes fetal monitoring equipment and furniture
for a family member to stay with the mothers or newborns. |
Adult
Medical Surgical Unit - 4 beds -
The 4 beds in the Med/Surg unit are occupied by 3 SimMan® and 1
geriatric patient. The students are able to use the state-of-the-science
Hill-Rom Nurse Call System that tracks patient call and caregiver
response times. In addition, use of an actual Pyxis® medication
administration station allows the students to learn best practices to
ensure patient safety. |
| Emergency
Services - 7 beds - The
Emergency Services lab can accommodate a minimum of 7 manikins. Three
SimMan® and 4 VitalSim™ manikins are available for scenarios. Equipment
in this area includes a crash cart and a defibrillator. |
Adult
Intensive Care Unit - 4 beds -
The Adult Intensive Care Unit has 4 patients - 3 SimMan® and 1 bariatric
manikin simulating an obese patient. The furnishings in this room allow
the students to use a full array of monitoring and resuscitation
equipment. |
|
Pediatric Unit - 3 beds (and 2 bed NICU)
These 2 units allow for
3 manikins in the Pediatric Unit and 2 manikins in the Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit. One of these manikins is SimBaby™, which has the
capability to demonstrate physiologic changes such as cyanosis (The
baby’s lips turn blue if the oxygen level drops below a certain level),
changes in heart and respiratory rate, lung and heart sounds. |
Team
Training Unit - The large
Team Training Room facilitates individual and interdisciplinary
development and assessment of in-hospital rescue, stabilization, and
resuscitation skills. Both adult and child scenarios can take place in
this room. The large wall-mounted screen allows for immediate
performance feedback to the students using Laerdal’s Advanced Video
System™. |
|
Family Health &
Wellness The
ability to communicate therapeutically with family and friends is a
learned ability, vital to the care of all patients, family members and
visitors. The Family Health and Wellness Room offers the ability
to replicate various settings in which students can practice responding
to questions and providing support and information. |
Debriefing Room -
Teaching/learning activities in all
areas of the Smart Hospital™ can be video taped from a centralized
control room. The Debriefing area has the multi-functional possibility
to be converted from 1 large room for classroom teaching to 4 individual
rooms for review of the simulations that have occurred in the Smart
Hospital™ or other teaching /learning environments. |
|
Computer & Task Training
The Lab contains 13 stations with
computerized self-directed learning tools such as MicroSim Inhospital™
and Adult and Pediatric Virtual I.V. ™ as well as 10 learning stations
equipped with a full array of individual task trainers. Examples of some
of our task trainers include individual IV arms, suture arms, and blood
pressure arms. |
Control Room:
The 13 computer stations allow faculty and
staff to control and view simulations that are occurring at the bedside
or in the Family Health and Wellness Room. Technicians run preprogrammed
scenarios or instructors are able to generate or alter simulations
taking place at the bedside in response to students’ interventions in
real time.
