Spotlight on Nursing Students

This page is designed to highlight the projects of our undergraduate and graduate students and will be updated periodically.

Hot Topics Blogs - Student blogs for Pharmacology class have far-reaching impact
The hot topic blogs are designed to get students to think about a hot topic in pharmacology and present all sides of the issue on a blog site.  They are asked to use resources that are non-biased and present clear arguments for both sides.  There is a lot of controversy right now over using OTC cough and cold meds in children and Mimi Pappas of the Consumer Healthcare Product Association (CHPA is the trade association for the makers of over-the-counter cold and cough medicines) contacted the professor and gave the students several reference resources for their investigation.

Dear Professor Thames: I came across several of your students’ class blogs recently, and I was very impressed by their work. I am pleased to see that a blog project about recent topics relating to medicine safety is part of your curriculum. That said, I thought you and your students might be interested in some additional resources and information about medicine safety.  I wish your students the best of luck on their projects, and I look forward to seeing the final results. If you have any questions about these initiatives or CHPA, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Honors College - School of Nursing honors students
Since 1999, the School of Nursing Honors Program has grown to include 54 undergraduate students. As members of Honors College, students have the opportunity to become self‐reliant, independent scholars working with faculty in challenging courses and innovative research projects. To earn an Honors diploma at UTA, a student must complete at least 24 hours of Honors credit, including a minimum of 9 hours in the major. Considering the demanding schedule of nursing students, it is truly an accomplishment to earn an Honors diploma. The student is also required to complete an Honors thesis or creative project.
We are pleased to have three Honors graduates this semester.

  • Christine Chasse, mentored by Ms. Tamara Wright, identified factors that motivate nurses to choose a career in academia in her thesis Examination of Relations of Career Variables and Select Demographic Variables in a Nursing Faculty and Nursing Student Population;

  • Rachel Hudlow, mentored by Dr. Patricia Newcomb, wrote and illustrated a book to teach children the basic concepts behind genetics in a creative project Putting the Cookies on the Right Shelf: Creating a Book to Teach Children about Genetics; and

  • Damilola Olatunji, mentored by Dr. Phyllis Adams, investigated a devastating disease in her thesis Sickle Cell Trait: Is This a New Syndrome?

Undergraduate Research Assistantship Program  - Poonam Gandhi was invited to do a presentation on the benefits of this program to students in the Honors College. Her work in that program has earned her the first undergraduate Research Assistant position in the Center for Nursing Scholarship & Technology - and she is just a sophomore. more information
