Student & Scholar Services »Change of Status From F-1 to F-2

A change of non-immigrant status from F-1 to F-2 may be requested when the principal F-1 alien wishes to remain in the U.S. while the F-1 spouse completes a course of study, or if the F-1 student cannot maintain full-time enrollment. The F-2 spouse is not eligible to accept employment at any time.

The documents which need to be submitted to USCIS to apply for a change of status from F-1 to F-2 are:

  1. Form I-539, application for change of non-immigrant status.
  2. Check for $195.00, made out to USCIS.
  3. Applicant's SEVIS I-20.
  4. New I-20 of F-1 spouse showing dependent living expenses ($5000 per year).
  5. Copy of both sides of applicant's I-94 card.
  6. Financial documents showing that the couple has enough to cover the F-1 expenses and additional amount for the F-2 spouse.
  7. Copy of marriage certificate or family register.
  8. Passport identity page of both spouses.
  9. Additional documentation as recommended by the International Student Advisor.
Please bring all of the above documents to the Office of International Education. The International Student Advisor will review the application and forward the request to the INS Texas Service Center for adjudication. Processing will take a minimum of two months and student will be notified when the documents have been returned.
