Computer Store FAQ

Q: Where are you located?

A: We are located in the first floor of the Ransom Hall (24hr Computer lab Building), Room #113. The Ransom Hall Is on the South West side of the University Center.

Q: Will my programs work on Windows 7?
A: Any program that is compatible with Windows Vista will work just fine in Windows 7.

Q: Does it matter whether I get the 32 bit or the 64 bit version of Windows 7?
A: If you have a 32 bit processor (check with the manufacturer of your computer), you can ONLY use the 32 bit version of the Windows 7 Ultimate Upgrade. But if you have a 64 bit processor, you could use either one. Keep in mind that if you have a 64 bit operating system, you will need to ensure that the programs you run can operate in that 64 bit environment.

Q: How can we pay for the software or the products that we buy at the computer store?
A: Payment can be made by cash, personal check ( No business checks or third party checks can be accepted), Mav-Money and any Major Personal Credit Card (No business checks or third party Credit Cards can be accepted).

Q: How many copies of MSCA Software can each student get?
A: Each student can get one copy of the current versions of Software listed under the Microsoft Campus Agreement.

Q: Do you carry any full versions of Windows Operating System under the MSCA?
A: No, we offer the Windows XP SP2 Upgrade (CD media) and the Windows Vista Ultimate Upgrade (DVD media) under the Microsoft Campus Agreement.

Q: Where do I find my product key?
A: For media available to students and faculty/staff work-at-home users, the product key is located on a sticker on the back of the envelope in which your installation CDs came. For multidisc sets, the key will usually be on the last envelope.For faculty and staff using volume license media on multiple computers (for use on University-owned computers only), the product keys will be available on a separate piece of paper or online (requires UT EID). The product key is 25-characters in five sets of five characters. There may be an eight-character part number beneath the key; this is not the product key. Please note that the product key is printed in a machine-readable font in which "B"s and "8"s often look similar.Note: DO NOT LOSE THIS KEY!

Q: What happens if I lose my product key?
A: By and large, product keys are uniquely generated by Microsoft. If they are lost, they cannot be re-created. Note: DO NOT LOSE THIS KEY! .... If you have lost your key you may contact Microsoft. Microsoft Software Lost key Code Telephone Number: 1-888-571-2048. Faculty and Staff using Windows XP or Office XP on departmental computers can access volume license keys for these products online (requires UT EID).

Q: What if I get a new computer? Can I transfer the software?
A: Once you have activated a software product, the unique product key becomes linked to your physical computer in Microsoft's systems. If you try to install the software on a second computer , you will get an error. If you want to transfer the software permanently to a second computer, you will need to activate the product by phone for the second computer after completely uninstalling the software from the first computer. There may be a charge associated with moving the activation from one computer to another , and Microsoft may limit the number of times the software can be moved. It is up to you to contact Microsoft and resolve any activation issues . The University cannot intervene on your behalf and cannot provide you with additional product keys. Microsoft Office suites and application (e.g. Office Professional, FrontPage , etc.) are licensed to run on one desktop computer and on a second portable computer for  your exclusive use only .

Q: Can the MSCA Windows Software be installed on more than one computer?
A: No, the MSCA Windows Software limits the installation to one computer. The license for Windows operating system upgrade software entitles you to install the software on one computer only. If you have additional computers , you will need to purchase retail copies of the Microsoft Windows operating system for them.

Q: What is the difference between educational/academic software and commercial software?
A: Educational/academic software can only be used for educational purposes. Academic software cannot be used for financial gain.

Q: Can we purchase computers from the UT Arlington Computer Store?
A: You can special order Apple Computers from the UT Arlington Computer Store. If you are interested in PCs then we can provide you with the Dell  member ID which will identify you as an affiliate of UT Arlington, this entitles you to the discount provided by each company. UT Arlington Dell Faculty/Staff/Student Program. Also, there are select Dell laptops sold in the UT Arlington Computer Store itself

Q: What AntiVirus software do you carry?
A: Symantec Norton 360, McAfee Total Protection, McAfee Internet Security Suite and Trend Micro Internet Security are available for your personal purchase to use on your home computers.

Q: What Mac Office Software do you carry?
A: We carry the latest Office for Mac on DVD media (Includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Entourage).

Q: What Operating Systems is Mac Office 2008 compatible with?
A: Mac Office 2008 is compatible with MAC OS 10.4 and over.

Q: Do you carry Microsoft Word?
A: We do not carry Word alone. It comes in a package with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, etc. Its called the Microsoft Office Suite.

Q: Who is eligible to purchase the products under the Microsoft Campus Agreement with the UT System?
A: Current UT Faculty, Staff,  Student and Faculty with an emeritus status are eligible to purchase.  Home campus point of distribution is available for each campus.  Current UT ID is required to verify eligibility status.  For more information on the Microsoft Campus Agreement please visit:  http://www.utexas.edu/its/products/microsoft/

Q: Does Microsoft Office 2007 Enterprise work on Windows Vista/WindowsXP/Windows 7?
A: Yes. It works in Windows XP with SP2 or later -- including Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Q: What is your Return Policy?
A: Absolutely, no Returns on Microsoft Campus Licensed Media, No Exceptions. Same Title Exchanges On Defective Media Only.  No Returns or Refunds on any of the UT Arlington Student License Media which include Adobe , Mathcad, Mathematica Student License software . Absolutely, No returns After 30 days of purchase.  Returns Accepted on unopened boxed software with receipt within 30 days of purchase.
