How to Get:

Updating A Department Lab

How to Use:

OIT creates a bootable restore image to help lab administrators restore software to lab machines. This document explains the process of using the image to restore the lab.

In order to restore the machines using the image, you will need the following:

  • Bootable external firewire drive containing the restore disk images for the lab: LaCie 320GB Firewire 400/800
  • Passwords for the xxling account.

If you do not have or do not know any of the information listed, please contact a Faculty/Staff Administrator.

To do a full restore of the machine:

  1. Eject all CD/DVD's, USB thumb drives, external USB and/or Firewire drives, and any other type of mountable disks.
  2. Power down the computer.
  3. Connect the external Firewire drive that contains the lab image.
  4. Hold down the option key on the keyboard and power on the computer.
  5. Hold down the option key until you see a selection of boot volumes.
  6. Select the BOOTiMac101 volume and hit the return key.
  7. Login to the xxling account.
  8. Open the IMAGES disk volume on the desktop.
  9. Open the /IMAGES/LING101/RUN-FIRST.command file and verify that the internal hard drive is disk0.
  10. **IMPORTANT** If and only if the internal hard drive is listed as disk0, then open the /IMAGES/LING101/0ling101disk0.command file. Opening 0ling101disk0.command will erase disk0, so if the internal hard drive is not disk0, this script will try to erase what it thinks is disk0.
  11. Wait until the 0ling101disk0.command is done before going to the next step.
  12. Copy /IMAGES/LING101/LING101-asr.dmg to the IMAGE partition of the internal hard drive (takes about 20 mins. or more).
  13. Open NetRestoreTEXTS.app from the Desktop
  14. Click the lock icon and enter the xxling password
  15. Click the Restore button - this will rebuild the TEXTS partition
  16. When the TEXTS rebuild is done, click the OK button and quit NetRestore
  17. Open NetRestoreUM.app from the Desktop
  18. Click the lock icon and enter the xxling password
  19. Click the Restore button - This will rebuild the UNICASTMAN partition
  20. When the UNICASTMAN rebuild is done, click the Shutdown button
  21. When the computer is powered off, unplug the firewire drive
  22. Power on the computer
  23. The NetRestore application should change the default boot volume to UNICASTMAN and thus the computer should boot to the UNICASTMAN partition
  24. Login to the xxling account
  25. NetRestore should auto launch
  26. Click on the lock icon in the NetRestore window
  27. Enter the xxling password
  28. Click the Restore button
  29. Once the restore is done, the computer will automatically reboot to the MACOSX partition

To do a MACOSX only restore of the machine:

  1. These instructions assume that the full restore instructions have been done and that you want to only rebuild the MACOSX partition.
  2. Eject all CD/DVD's, USB thumb drives, external USB and/or Firewire drives, and any other type of mountable disks.
  3. Power down the computer.
  4. Hold down the option key on the keyboard and power on the computer.
  5. Hold down the option key until you see a selection of boot volumes.
  6. Wait until the wristwatch cursor turns into a normal cursor.
  7. Select the UNICASTMAN volume and hit the return key.
  8. Login to the xxling account.
  9. NetRestore should auto launch.
  10. Click on the lock icon in the NetRestore window.
  11. Enter the xxling password.
  12. Click the Restore button.
  13. Once the restore is done, the computer will automatically reboot to the MACOSX partition.
