Cost Saving Through Desktop Monitor Power Management

As part of the University's cost cutting strategy, the Office of Information Technology (OIT) recommends that all UT Arlington faculty and staff take the following steps to help reduce energy costs:

  • Do not turn on computers, monitors, printers, and other peripheral devices until they are needed each day.

  • Turn off all non-critical computers, monitors, printers, and other peripheral devices at the end of each work day.

  • Configure monitors to go into sleep mode each day during periods of inactivity.

The average computer consumes 70 to 90 watts per hour, the average monitor consumes 60 to 80 watts per hour when in use and a mere 4 to 8 watts when in sleep mode. It is also estimated that the energy used by air conditioning to offset the heat generated is equal to the watts consumed by the computer equipment. Given that there are 5000+ computers on campus the estimated cost to run them 8 hours a day is $187,000 per year. The cost to run them 24 hours a day is a staggering $561,000 per year. By implementing these cost saving measures power consumption can be reduced resulting in substantial savings to the university's annual energy costs. To set up the display sleep settings, please select the appropriate operating system for your computer from the choices below and follow the corresponding instructions.

  • Windows XP Settings

  • Mac OS 10.2 Settings
