Disposal of Hard Disk Drives and other Media

Description:

If a computer UT Arlington owned Mac or PC is in the process of being disposed/sent to surplus, all electronic media (hard disk drive, floppy disk, or magnetic tape) must be sanitized to prevent the inadvertent disclosure of protected and/or confidential information.

Available To:

  • Faculty (currently appointed) and Staff
  • Departments and Offices at UT Arlington

How to Get:

  • Individual Departments should be using Symantec GDisk to erase any hard disk drives or floppy diskettes prior to sending them to Surplus for redistribution/disposal on and off campus.

  • UT Arlington Office of Information Technology (OIT) will use Symantec GDisk to format any hard disk drives or floppy diskettes being sent to surplus. If GDisk will not run on a Mac then the hard disk drive should be removed from the Mac and placed in a PC so that it may be formatted with GDisk.

  • UT Arlington Central Receiving / Surplus

    • Non-Functional hard disk drives - use degaussing machine to permanently erase and render it unusable

    • Functional hard disk drives - use Symantec GDisk to erase prior to redistribution/disposal on and off campus

    • All other magnetic media - use degaussing machine to permanently erase
