Known Issues:
Snow Leopard is available for Intel Macs only.
Rosetta–the technology that allows an Intel Mac to run PowerPC software–is not part of the default install of Snow Leopard. Enable it from the customize button during the installation or install it from the "Optional Installs" folder found on the original DVD. The current version of tn3270 and the stunnel proxy rely on Rosetta at this time.
Some software may not be compatible with Snow Leopard and Apple has pro-actively disabled software that might already be installed on your computer. Please check Apple's list of incompatible applications and then check with the manufacturers for a Snow Leopard compatible version.
Flip4Mac is currently beta testing their WMV software for Snow Leopard. Please be aware this is not a final version and may experience problems. The beta can be downloaded from their website.
The version of the Flash player plugin included with Snow Leopard will downgrade the version you have installed on your Mac already. You need to update Flash Plugin as soon as you can by navigating to Adobe's download page.
UTA Exchange email accounts can be accessed from Mail.app's new Exchange 2007 support. Please read instructions on configuring Mail.app for UTA e-mail.
Snow Leopard no longer needs the Cisco VPN tool to connect to the UTA VPN server. Detailed instructions are available on OIT's website.
How to Get:
Mac OS X 10.6.x is available for purchase at the UT Arlington Computer Store. Apple provides free updates for Mac OS X 10.6.x via the Software Update feature in the Apple Menu. Mac OS X 10.6 is not a free upgrade from earlier versions of Mac OS X
Upgrade Licenses require an additional copy of Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard" for each computer. Licenses cannot be shared with other computers. (One Upgrade and One Leopard for One Computer)
Intel Macs that are only licensed for Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger" need to purchase the "Mac Box Set" which includes a full "Snow Leopard" license as well as additional software. (Please note that OIT does not currently provide support for the iLife or iWork package included in the "Mac Box Set".) Licenses cannot be shared with other computers. (One Box Set for One Computer)
The 5-pack Family Pack option is not permitted for commercial/enterprise users.
Macintoshes that were purchased after June 8, 2009 are eligible for Apple's Up-To-Date program where a Snow Leopard upgrade can be purchased at a reduced price. Participation is time sensative, so please read the details on Apple's Up-To-Date website and arrange to purchase your copy of the software as soon as possible.
Support:
Call the OIT Help Desk at (817) 272-2208 or see Apple's Support page
OIT is currently reviewing Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" for use on UTA Macintosh computers. At this time, OIT is only providing minimal support for this version and we do NOT recomend clients upgrade their computers at this time.
Because some important software such as SPSS are not yet compatible with Snow Leopard, OIT cannot advise users of these software packages to upgrade at this time. Please checkApple's list of incompatible applicationsand then check with the manufacturers for a Snow Leopard compatible version.
Backing up data is the responsibility of the client. One such method is burning data to a CD or DVD. Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard" also features a backup system called Time Machine. If you use Time Machine, you will need to enable it, and be familiar with how to recover data using it.
