Installing CrashPlan on Mac OS X

Available To:

  • Faculty (currently appointed) and Staff

How to Get:

Download the latest version of the CrashPlan Client from the downloads page.  When you click on the download link, you will be asked to authenticate with your NetID and Password. Click Log In.



After you have authenticated, if you are using Safari, the file will automatically be downloaded to your Downloads folder. Note: If you are using Firefox or almost any other browser you will then be asked to open using a handler or save file.  At this point, please select Open with DiskImageMounter (default) and skip to step 5.

Click on the Downloads icon on your dock or open the Downloads folder.  If you click downloads from the dock, click the CrashPlan Disc Image file once to open it. If you are opening from the Downloads folder, click twice.





Click Install CrashPlanPROe to run the CrashPlan Installer.



Click Continue on the introduction screen to go to the next step.



Click Continue on the Software License Agreement page.



Click Agree to the SLA pop up.



The installer will default to the Standard Install option.  Click Install on this page.



The installer will ask you for administrator credentials in order to install the software.  Please input required credentials and click Install Software.



Once the installation is complete, click Close.  Note: If you are a technician installing CrashPlan for another user, please log out and have the primary user log in using their credentials at this time.  The Primary user may be prompted to install Java SE 6 runtime which will require Administrator access to install.  Other than that the primary user should use their credentials whenever prompted for a username and password throughout the rest of the setup process.



After the installer has been closed, the CrashPlan application will appear in the Applications Folder.  Double click or Run the CrashPlan application.



When the application opens, if you do not have Java SE 6 runtime, the CrashPlan application will ask you to install it at this time.  If prompted, please click Install. Administrator credentials will be required.



Please click Agree at the License Agreement page for the JRE installer.



The JRE installer looks like the screen below:



After the JRE installer is complete, click OK.  CrashPlan will now run.



Select New Account.  First Name and Last Name fields are not required. Enter your NetID and then your Password twice.  Click Create Account.



Immediately after you click Create Account, the initial backup will begin.



All files in the user’s profile folder will be backed up except for those that meet the following conditions:

Any applications/movies/music/pictures that are installed in the users’ folder/desktop will not be backed up.

None of the system files listed for any OS will be backed up.








If any files on the users’ folder have the file extensions listed below will NOT be backed up.

.avi (audio video files)

.app (application files)

.dll (system files)

.dmg (disk image files)

.exe (executable files)

.iso (disk image file)

.log (files that log data)

.mov (movie files)

.mp3 (audio files)

.m4a (audio files)

.mp4 (audio files)

.mpkg (media collection file)

.pkg (mac installer file)


If your department or the department that you support requires any of the above formats or if you know of additional files you need to exclude from being backed up. Please contact the Help Desk with that information.
