MATLAB is a high-level technical computing language and interactive environment for algorithm development, data visualization, data analysis, and numeric computation. Using the MATLAB product, you can solve technical computing problems faster than with traditional programming languages, such as C, C++, and Fortran.

You can use MATLAB in a wide range of applications, including signal and image processing, communications, control design, test and measurement, financial modeling and analysis, and computational biology. Add-on toolboxes (collections of special-purpose MATLAB functions, available separately) extend the MATLAB environment to solve particular classes of problems in these application areas. Here is a list of toolboxes that are available to use through our academic site license.

Known Issues:

  • MATLAB 2012a is not recommended for OS X 10.8. Starting with R2012b, MATLAB is fully supported on Mountain Lion.
  • If you face issues starting up or using MATLAB on Mac OS X 10.8, please install X11 on your computer. Instuction of performing this installation may be found here. 

How to Get:

The University of Texas at Arlington has entered into a new site licensing model for Matlab & Simulink usage called Total Academic Headcount Campus License. It allows campus-wide access to Matlab on University of Texas at Arlington owned computers to all faculty, staff and students. Faculty and Staff are also entitled to install Matlab on their personally owned computers. The new license will provide Matlab users access to 50 toolboxes.

Teaching & Academic Research Usage: Please contact the OIT Help Desk Be ready to provide answers to the following questions so that your request will be processed in a timely manner.  Based on the information provided, the Helpdesk will direct your software request to an appropriate Client Services group to assist you with your software installation.

  1. Are you a member of the UTA Faculty/Staff or a UTA enrolled student?
  2. Provide contact information such as phone number and e-mail address.
  3. If Teaching: what is the course name and number?
  4. On how many systems will Matlab be installed?
  5. What platform will be used, such as Windows (32 or 64 bit)
  6. What are the UTA asset tag numbers on the target systems?
  7. If the system is a Windows System, what is it's Computer Name?


Matlab Installation

  • Automated Installation Method: Matlab may be installed by utilizing our automated software delivery system called JAMF.
    •  Instructions on how to install the JAMF client to enable OIT owned systems to receive automated installations may be found at the following location: Once the JAMF client has successfully installed, please submit a software installation request as specified in the How to Get section on this page.
    • When submitting your software request, please mention that your system is configured for JAMF deployments. Once the software has been advertised to your system, an OIT support member will notify you that it is ready for you initiate the advertised installation. 
  • Manual Installation Method: This method is for installation of Matlab on UTA owned systems that are not on the UTA domain or fail to receive an advertised installation package through JAMF.
  • Faculty/Staff Install on personally owned system: Faculty and Staff members may put in a request for a single installation of Matlab on a personally owned system. Please observe these steps to get a copy of Matlab installed on your personally owned system.
    • Please contact the Help Desk and provide the following information about the system.
      1. Type of OS the system uses.
      2. The volume serial number for your system
      a. Windows OS To obtain the Volume Serial Number, open a Command Prompt window, and run the command: vol c:
      b. Use the serial number listed (ex. 1234-1234).
      c. For a Mac OS X machine, the host ID is the MAC Address of the built in Ethernet device (en0). To obtain this value, use Terminal in /Applications/Utilities and run the command: netstat -I en0
      d. The host ID is listed in the first row of the output, under the "Address" column.
      3. Once this information is provided to the Helpdesk, they will submit a software install request to the appropraite group within OIT Client Services.
      4. Once eligibility has been verified, a set of instructions on how to install and activate the software will be sent to the staff/faculty member by e-mail.
