Install Microsoft Forefront Client Security (FCS)

System requirements: Windows

Description:

Effective July 8, 2009, UT Arlington is not renewing its license for any Symantec antivirus product. The license expires on September 24, 2009. Symantec antivirus products must be removed from all UTA and personal computers by September 24, 2009.

Windows computers that are a member of the UTA domain will automatically be migrated from any Symantec antivirus product to Microsoft Forefront Client Security (FCS).

Non-UTA domain and personal computers can use the installation instructions below at their own risk.

How to Use:

Install Microsoft Forefront Client Security

  1. Download FCS. Download from the web server will require an active UTA NetID and password (64-bit version also available).
  2. Open your Downloads folder, or the location to which you saved the download, and double-click the file, MS-FCS.EXE.
  3. Select 'OK' when prompted that the application will be installed.
    • The installation may take several minutes. During the installation you may see an orange icon icon picture
  4. Select 'OK' when prompted that the installation is complete.
    • Once all updates and definitions for the FCS program have been installed, the system tray icon will change to green green picture.
  5. The installer will open a browser to verify that updates have been installed, run Microsoft Update and click Custom.
  6. Select the Microsoft Forefront Client Security update(s).
  7. Click Review and install updates.
  8. Click Install Updates.

Reminder: Once you have installed FCS, you must uninstall any other antivirus products.

Known Issues:

  • Microsoft Forefront Client Security will not run on Windows XP Media Center.
  • Machines running Vista with UAC enabled will receive the following error message: "Installation failed. Failed to initialize log file…Make sure that the log path and file and/or install path is valid and accessible." In this case, client setup will fail. To avoid this issue, you must run client setup from an elevated command prompt. Right-click on the saved downloaded installation file (MS-FCS.exe) and go to properties. Click on the Compatibility Tab and select to Run as Windows XP (Service Pack 2)Okay. Then right-click on the file and Run as Administrator. You may see a dialog box, asking for permission to install the program. Click Continue/Yes/Allow.
  • For personal machines, not supported by OIT, please see Microsoft TechNet Forefront Client Security TechCenter
    • Forefront installed on home computers may require having Microsoft Update in order to get its definition updates. After you get Microsoft Update, open Forefront and click 'Check for Updates' one more time.  It should work properly and give you a nice green check in the system tray.
      • To enable Microsoft Update:
      • For XP: On the client, go to http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-US and accept agreements needed to get Microsoft Update.
      • For Vista: Open Windows Update. Notice in the middle of the window it says "You receive updates:" If this says "For Windows Only," click the yellow boxed link which says something like "get updates for more products." Accept the agreement and you'll apply Microsoft Update.
      • Note: If it says "For Windows and other products from Microsoft Update," you have already applied Microsoft Update
