Vendor: VMware

Product: VMware Fusion

Version: 4

Standard Software Supported By: Desktop

OIT Support Levels: Minimal

Function:

Virtualization software for running a guest operating system in Mac OS X.

System Requirements: OIT Required

  • Base OS: Mac
  • OS Version: 10.5
  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo or newer
  • RAM: 2 GB
  • Additional Hard Disk Space Needed: 10 GB for each virtual machine

Known Issues:

When an emulated OS is running it is possible that you will not see any inserted CD's/DVD's mount on the Mac OS Desktop. The solution is to disconnect the optical drive in the VMWare Fusion toolbar or uncheck the Virtual Machine Settings to have the CD-ROM drive connected.

For Apple Mighty Mice, enable the Secondary Button in System Preferences:Keyboard & Mouse: Mouse tab. For MacBooks and MacBook Pros enable two finger on the trackpad for secondary clicking in System Preferences:Keyboard & Mouse: Trackpad tab.

IMPORTANT: If you install a Virtual Machine OS, that installation can be vulnerable to viruses, spyware, etc. You will need to install security updates and anti-virus software within the Virtual Machine OS.

If a UTA campus IP address is needed in the Virtual Machine OS for adding the Virtual Machine to the UTA domain, then bridged networking is needed. This can be set by clicking on Virtual Machine in the menu bar and selecting settings. In the settings window, click on Ethernet and then select Connect directly to the physical network (Bridged). Once done the Virtual Machine should get a campus IP address if the Mac is on campus and connected to the UTA network.
