Creating A Student Web Page using FrontPage

System requirements: Windows

Description:

It is not the function of the Help Desk to teach any individual how to program and publish a web page.  It is up to you, as the student, to research and learn what you can from your peers, instructors, online resources, etc.  OIT also offers free training courses that cover FrontPage and other MS Office products.  The list of these courses is available on our Training site

That being noted, we have done our best to provide a short tutorial for those interested.  These instructions are a basic introduction to web publishing.  Students are not limited to using a particular program for FTP or web publishing.  For simplicity, the tutorial below features FrontPage for web publishing and Internet Explorer for file transfer (FTP).

First you will need to create a home page.  This file is important because it serves as a foundation for the rest of your web site.  When this file is uploaded to your web folder, it will be the first page that visitors see when they open your website.  This file must be named index.html for the server to recognize it as your home page.  This file can be created with any program, such as, Microsoft FrontPage, Macromedia Dreamweaver or even Microsoft Word.

How to Use:

To create a web page using FrontPage:

  1. Open FrontPage
  2. In the lower left hand corner of the screen, select Design. Design simply shows a blank page similar to Microsoft Word on which you can add text or images.
  3. After you have created what will be your home page, you will need to save it onto the hard drive of your personal computer.  When you save the file or document it must be named, index.html.
    1. To save the file, select File and Save As.

    2. At the top of the Save As window, select where you want this file to be saved (Desktop, Documents, etc.).
    3. In the Name field type, index and in the Save as field, select Web Pages or HTML Files.

  4. Open Internet Explorer and type ftp://students.uta.edu in the address field.  Press Enter.

  5. You will be prompted to log onto the students.uta.edu server with your NetID and password.  In the username field, you will need to type, uta\ in front of your NetID.  The password will be the same one that you would use to log onto a lab computer or to check your UT Arlington e-mail.

  6. After logging onto students.uta.edu, you will see three folders.  Select the Student Web Folder.
  7. Then, select the folder labeled with the first two letters of your NetID.

  8. Locate the folder labeled with your NetID and double-click on it.  When you open your folder, you will have an empty screen or window.  This is where you will store the files that will be display on your website.

  9. Locate the index.html file that you saved to your hard drive.  Right-click on it and select Copy.  If you are not able to perform this action, you can use the "drag and drop" method.  To "drag and drop", position the cursor over the file and while holding the left mouse button down, drag the file into the desired folder or window.

  10. Right-click inside the window displaying your open web folder and select Paste.  When the file has been moved to this window, it has also been uploaded to the web.

  11. To view the index.html file as a web page, you must type the viewing URL for your web account in the browser window.  For example, if your NetID is abc1234, you will need to type the URL, http://students.uta.edu/ab/abc1234 , in the address window of Internet Explorer. The index.html file will be displayed as a web page at your viewing URL.
