Identity Finder

Identity Finder is a software application that is provided to the UT Arlington community of active students, faculty and staff for use on their personally owned computers.  Identity Finder is also installed on UT Arlington owned computers that are part of the UTA domain.  Identity Finder is used to identify and locate sensitive data.  Once the data is located Identity Finder has a number of built-in and integrated features to assist the user in removing and/or securing the sensitive data.

What is sensitive data?

UT System as per UTS-165 defines sensitive data as follows:
Digital Data maintained by an Entity that requires higher than normal security measures to protect it from unauthorized access, modification or deletion.  Sensitive Data may be either public or confidential and is defined by each Entity based on compliance with applicable federal or state law or on the demonstrated need to (a) document the integrity of that Digital Data (i.e., that the Data had not been altered by either intent or accident), (b) restrict and document individuals with access to that Digital Data, and (c) ensure appropriate backup and retention of that Digital Data.

I'm a student, how does that affect my personally owned computer?

For the individual person, sensitive data includes information that can be used to identify you.  This can include any one or any combination of the following:
Name
Date of Birth
Address
Phone Number
Email Address
Driver's License Number
Social Security Number
Bank Account
PayPal Account
Credit Card Number
Passport Number
passwords
and more...

It is a recommended best practice to keep this type of data off of your computer hard drive.  In the event your computer is compromised attackers can search your hard drive and upon finding this data could use it to commit a number of offenses.  These offenses can range from being comparatively low threat such as hi-jacking your Facebook account all the way to extremely high threat such as draining your entire bank account or identity theft.
