Windows 2000 - Dial-Up Setup

Description:

This document describes how to setup an Internet connection through the UT Arlington Dial-up system with a modem running Point-to-Point-Protocol (PPP) under Windows 2000's Network and Dial-up Connections.

 

Before using the UT Arlington Dial-In system, please read the UT Arlington Dial-up Policy. It contains important information on proper use and limits associated with this service. Also review the FAQ for UTA Dial-up.

 

This document assumes that the reader has a fair understanding of Windows 2000 operation and that the reader has a default Windows 2000 setup with a properly installed modem and a valid UTA NetID and password for the UT Arlington domain.

How to Use:

  1. From the Desktop, double-click My Computer, and then double-click Control Panel, and then double-click Network and Dial-Up Connections.

  2. From the Network and Dial-Up Connections window, double-click Make New Connection to start the Network Connection Wizard.

  3. Click Next once the Network Connection Wizard opens.

  4. Choose Dial-up to a private network from the Network Connection Type screen, and click Next.

  5. At the Phone Number to Dial screen, fill in the Phone number fields with the modem number appropriate for you.

    Be aware that these numbers are not metro numbers, and that you will be responsible for any long-distance or other service charges incurred by using the numbers below. Check with your phone company to verify which, if any, of these numbers are free for you to dial.

    To lookup all the access numbers, input "all" into the area code field.

  6. Click Next.

  7. In the Connection Availability screen, select For all users under Create this connection, and click Next.

  8. At the Make New Connection Wizard screen, fill in the Type the name you want to use for this connection box with a name such as UT Arlington, check the Add shortcut to my Desktop box, and click Finish.

  9. The Connect to UT Arlington window should open automatically, but if it does not, then double-click the UT Arlington icon in the Network and Dial-up Connections window.

  1. Enter your valid UTA NetID and password in the User name and Password fields. (A default password will NOT be accepted - you must use an actual password. To change your password from the default to an actual password, follow instructions at http://www.uta.edu/selfservice. You will need to enter your NetID and the string @uta.edu for the username portion of authentication.

  • NetID@uta.edu - where NetID is your current NetID for accessing computers on campus, checking e-mail, accessing grades, etc.

  1. Click Dial.

  2. If the connection is successful, the Connect to UT Arlington window will minimize to the task-bar icon-tray. While the PPP connection is active, the Connect to UT Arlington icon is visible in the task-bar icon-tray (bottom right-hand corner of Desktop)

To disconnect a PPP connection, double-click on the Connect to UT Arlington icon (image of two computers) in the task-bar icon-tray, and click Disconnect. You can click Close to return the icon to the task-bar icon-tray, or click Details for information about the current connection.

  • Reminder: Always disconnect when you are done using the Internet.

  1. The next time you want to connect to UT Arlington, double-click on the UT Arlington icon on your Windows Desktop, enter your NetID and password, and click Dial.
