Mac OS 10.3 - Dial-Up Setup

Description:

The following instructions are intended to serve as an example of how to configure Mac OS 10.3 to use the UT Arlington dial-in service.  These instructions are Mac OS 10.3 specific and any Mac OS X prior to 10.3 may require minor adaptation of these instructions or may not work at all. 

To make sure your version of Mac OS X is up to date with the stable release of version 10.3, see your local retailer or Apple Computer distributor.

  1. Start by verifying that your Mac OS X is in fact Mac OS 10.3.  The version number will be listed under the Apple Menu under the About this Mac option.

  1. Next, go to the Apple Menu, and choose System Preferences...

  1. This will bring up the System Preferences folder on your hard drive.  Look for the icon that says Network.  It will be the blue globe you see below with the word Network written under it.

  1. From the Show pull-down menu, select the device you plan on using to connect to the network.  This should be a 56K compatible modem.  Under the TCP/IP tab, set Configure to Using PPP.

  1. Select. the PPP tab, and enter in the information requested.

  • Be aware that these numbers are not metro numbers, and that you will be responsible for any long-distance or other service charges incurred by using the numbers below. Check with your phone company to verify which, if any, of these numbers are free for you to dial.

To lookup all the access numbers, input "all" into the area code field.

  • Make sure to enter in your UT Arlington NetID and Password. You will need to enter your NetID and the string @uta.edu for the username portion of authentication.

    • NetID@uta.edu


    where NetID is your current NetID for accessing computers on campus, checking e-mail, accessing grades, etc.

  • Click PPP Option.

  1. Under Session Options, select Disconnect when user logs out, and select Redial if busy with Redial set to 1 times, and Wait set to 30 seconds before redialing.  Under Advanced Options, select Send PPP echo packetsand Use TCP header compression.

  1. Select the Proxies tab, and make sure all entries are blank.

  1. Then select the Modem tab.  From the Modem pull-down menu, select the device you intend to use to connect.  Set the options according to those shown on the screen.

  • Placing a check mark in Show modem status in menu bar is optional but is strongly suggested.

  1. If you have Show modem status in menu bar checked, the icon of the phone will be displayed in the upper right-hand corner of your menu bar.  Clicking on this icon will give you quick access to establishing a connection and viewing the modem status.

  1. To connect to UT Arlington, click on the phone handset icon in the upper right hand corner of your menu bar and select Connect.

  • The following screen will give you a brief look at the connection you are about to dial and the properties associated with it.  

  • If at any time you need to edit these properties, click on Edit.  

  • If the information you entered is correct however, simply click on Connect to begin dialing.

  1. When you are successfully connected you will see the Status area below the password box expand to reveal the details of your connection.

  1. Click on Disconnect when you are finished.
