Windows XP - Dial-Up Setup

Description:

This document describes how to setup an Internet connection through the UT Arlington Dial-up system with a modem running Point-to-Point-Protocol (PPP) under Windows XP Network and Dial-up Connections. 

Before using the UT Arlington Dial-In system, please read the UTA Dial-up Policy. It contains important information on proper use and limits associated with this service. Also review the FAQ for UTA Dial-up

This document assumes that the reader has a fair understanding of Windows XP operation and that the reader has a default Windows XP setup with a properly installed modem and a valid UTA Windows NetID and password for the UT Arlington domain.

How to Use:

  1. Click on the Start button and select Control Panel

  2. From the Control Panel select Network and Internet Connections

  3. From the Network Connections window click the Network Connections icon

  4. Select Create a new connection from the sidebar on the left side

  5. Click Next once the New Connection Wizard opens

  6. Select Connect to the Internet and click Next

  7. Select Set up my connection manually, and click Next

  8. Select Connect using a dial-up modem, and click Next

  9. In the ISP Name text box enter UT Arlington and click Next

  10. At the Phone Number to Dial screen, fill in the Area code and Phone number fields with the modem number appropriate for you:

    Area Code:
    State:

     


    To lookup all the access numbers, input "all" into the area code field.

  11. Click Next.  To make area code box visible: Go to Control Panel and select Phone and Modem Options. Select Location and click on Edit, then go to Area Code Rules.  Click on Edit again, and check the box that says'Include the area code'.

  12. In the Internet Account Information window enter your NetID and password. Check all the boxes and click Next. You will need to enter your NetID and the string @uta.edu for the username portion of authentication.

  13. At the completion window check the box that says Add a shortcut to this connection to my Desktop and click Next

  14. You should now have a link which says UTA on your Desktop. Double-click the link and click Dial.

  15. If the connection is successful, the Connect to UT Arlington window will minimize to the task-bar icon-tray. While the PPP connection is active, the Connect to UT Arlington icon is visible in the task-bar icon-tray (bottom right-hand corner of Desktop).  
  16. To disconnect a PPP connection, double-click on the Connect to UTA icon (image of two computers) in the task-bar icon-tray, and click Disconnect. You can click Close to return the icon to the task-bar icon-tray, or clickDetails for information about the current connection. Reminder::  Always disconnect when you are done using the Internet.
  17. The next time you want to connect to UT Arlington, double-click on the UTA icon on your Windows Desktop, enter your UT Arlington  NetID and password, and click Dial.
