Notification PlanSeptember 29thThe Computer Science and Engineering faculty member reported a burglary at his residence to his local police department. October 2ndThe UT Arlington Police as well as the OIT Information Security Office were notified of the burglary. October 3rdUniversity officials met with the faculty member to identify the students potentially affected by the data theft. October 4th & 5thThe OIT Information Security Office initiated a notification campaign to distribute information regarding the data theft as well as the risk it poses for the affected individuals. The incident was additionally reported by local print and broadcast media services. October 6thThe campus help desk implemented a response mechanism for inquires from those potentially affected. The current estimate of affected students is approximately 7,000. October 7th & 8thThe Office of Information Technology continued to gather contact information for all affected students. October 9thThe OIT Information Security Office confirms after further research that the number of affected students has been reduced to approximately 2,500. October 10thA website is launched with the most current information about the data theft and advice for those affected on how to minimize or eliminate any potential identity theft or fraud. Additionally, the Office of Information Technology began negotiating with some firms to offer discounts for credit protection and fraud monitoring services to those whose records were exposed. October 11thAn email was sent from the Information Security Officer to all current faculty, staff and students informing them of further details in the recent data theft. The Office of Information Technology also continued to further confirm all affected students. October 12thThe OIT Information Security Office began sending emails to students that had been identified as being affected by this data theft. October 13thThe OIT Information Security Office annonuces that MyPublicInfo has offered it's "IdentitySweep" monitoring services at a discounted price to UT Arlington students. October 16thThe OIT Information Security Office continued sending emails to students that had been identified as being affected by this data theft. At this time only 65% of the students affected have valid email addresses on file with the University. October 18thThe OIT Information Security Office annonuces that Equifax has offered it's "Credit Watch™ Gold with 3-in-1 Monitoring" plan at a 50% discount to UT Arlington students. CurrentThe University is still in the process of notifying by email and by letter those whose information was contained in inadvertent data theft.
