IT for Students

This page intends to provide IT-related information and links to all UT Arlington students. For the new student, the menu below will lead to important information regarding your IT needs. Students already familiar with these details may use the Quick Links in the right column.

Please feel free to contact the OIT Webmaster for suggestions.

NetID

Each student at UT Arlington is automatically given a computer account that UT Arlington refers to as a "NetID." Your NetID is assigned when you apply to UT Arlington. Your NetID is permanent and will not change. For new students and applicants your temporary randomized password will be given to you by the Admission's Office in an e-mail (if an email address was provided by you) or via postal mail. Before you can use any network resources, you must activate your account and establish your own strong password at http://www.uta.edu/selfservice.

Network Drives

As a student you have access to various network storage drives. You receive 500Mb of storage space through MavSpace, 160 Mb through your J: drive, and 100 Mb through your web publishing folder. When using computers in the OIT labs, it is important to save the files on the  network drives since the files saved on the hard drives are automatically deleted.  In addition, the files on the network drives are accessible from on and off campus and are backed up every night. For more information about the network drives you have access to, please visit our Network Drives page.

MavMail

Your NetID gives you access to the UT Arlington e-mail system, called MavMail. UT Arlington has adopted MavMail (e-mail) as an official means of communication with students. First time enrollees at UT Arlington are able to access their MavMail account 24 hours after registering for classes and are expected to do so. Once created, the account stays active as long as you are enrolled at UT Arlington. Currently, you are expected to check MavMail each week. To learn about different access methods and your quota, please visit our e-mail page.

Students are required to select a user friendly e-mail address (name@uta.edu) at http://www.uta.edu/oit/createalias. Please keep in mind that choosing this e-mail alias will NOT change the NetID or your login information. Official information about MavMail is available at http://www.uta.edu/email.

Printing on Campus

You can print from the computers in the OIT computer labs and your personal laptop. Please visit our Pharos Printing page for more detail. OIT and the University Library have implemented a Student Print Management Program with a generous yearly quota, prorated by semester to be given to each student.

Software Discounts

Per a licensing agreement between UT System and Microsoft, the UT Arlington Computer Store distributes selected Microsoft software at substantial savings. Per a licensing agreement between our university and Symantec Corporation, the UT Arlington Computer Store also distributes Symantec AntiVirus software at a discounted price. You can find other academically priced software, storage media, and peripheral items at the store.  For more information, please visit the UT Arlington Computer Store.

Network Access

Your NetID gives you access to UT Arlington network resources from on and off campus. While on campus, you can access the UT Arlington network using the 900+ computers in any of the OIT computer labs or use your own personal machine and login to UT Arlington wireless. OIT has established several access points all around campus and most of the campus area has a wireless network coverage.  For the list of locations that have wireless access, please visit our UT Arlington Wireless page.

While off campus, you can access UT Arlington network via Resnet (if you live on campus) or dial-up and VPN. For more information about types of network access, please visit our Network Connections page.

MyMav

Your NetID gives you access to MyMav Sign In, the student information system allowing you to:

  • Register, add, and drop classes
  • Review your account balances, due dates, and make payments
  • Check your grades
  • Change your address

For instructions on how to utilize MyMav, please visit our training documentation.

Computer Labs

OIT provides students with access to over 900 computers in 10 computer labs across campus. Each computer lab is equipped with high-end PC and/or Macintosh computers, an abundant array of office and general productivity software, as well as discipline specific software, laser printing, and broadband Internet access. Ransom Hall is one of our largest labs with close to 300 PCs, 50+ Macintosh computers, laser printers, and scanners. It is open 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. For detailed information about each computer lab, please visit our Computer Labs page.

Distance Education

If you are taking an online course or your instructor supplements the classroom instruction with online courses, you will need to access Distance Education resources. There are several resources available for taking online courses - WebCT, Telecampus, Engineering Center for Distance Education. All of these online resources, except Telecampus,  require NetID to login. Make sure to check your syllabus and/or contact your instructor to make sure you access the correct resource.
