Texas Success Initiative (TSI)
All students must have completed or be exempt from the TSI prior to attending orientation. Students who have not completed this requirement will be unable to register for classes at New Maverick Orientation. Approved TSI tests are the THEA, Accuplacer, Asset, and Compass.
What do I need to know about the TSI?
Please check with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions for current exemptions at the Texas Success Initiative website or call 817.272.6287. Exemptions may change and may not be the same at every college or university.
If you are seeking admission to a state-approved educator preparation program or alternative certification program, you are required to demonstrate basic skills in reading, writing and math. Students seeking admission to an approved educator preparation program or seeking a Texas certificate though an approved alternative certification program may meet this requirement by passing all three sections of the THEA test (Accuplacer, Asset, or Compass may not be used to meet this requirement). The College of Education’s THEA requirements do not allow for any exemptions. If you have questions about the requirements for admission to a teacher education program, contact the UTA College of Education at 817.272.2956, or the State Board for Educator Certification at 512.469.3000 (Relay Texas TDD: 800.735.2989).
When must an approved test be taken?
- If you have not taken an approved test prior to orientation, you will not be allowed to register for classes.
- If you are seeking admission to a state-approved educator preparation program, you should contact an academic advisor in the College of Education for information about when to take the THEA Test.
Still need to take a test?
The THEA Quick Test and ACCUPLACER are offered to UT Arlington students who are not able to take the test on a regular test date.
