Testing Requirements
The state of Texas and UT Arlington have certain requirements that must be met before students can enroll in classes. All testing requirements should be completed before attending orientation to ensure no delays when registering for classes. Please see below for more details on the specific testing requirements.
Texas Success Initiative (TSI)
All students are required to complete the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) prior to attending orientation, as stipulated by the State of Texas. If this requirement is not complete you will be unable to register for classes at orientation. Many students have satisfied this requirement with scores on tests such as THEA, Accuplacer, COMPASS, SAT, ACT, or TAKS, which may have been submitted on your transcript. If you have questions about your TSI status please contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at 817-272-6287 or visit the TSI website.
If you need to take a TSI exam and live in the DFW area, please register with UT Arlington Testing Services. If you live outside of the DFW area, please e-mail Testing Services at testing@uta.edu for the option to take the Accuplacer as a remote exam. International students will need to wait until they are at UT Arlington to take the Accuplacer exam.
You will receive notice from the New Maverick Orientation office prior to attending orientation if you are registered but have not fulfilled the TSI requirement.
Math PLACEMENT Test
UT Arlington utilizes a testing program (separate from the TSI requirements) to determine your appropriate math placement. Careful placement increases your chances of success in math. Qualifying SAT or ACT scores or transfer credits may waive this requirement. If not, you are required to take the Math Placement Test before you can enroll in a math course and attend orientation. For more information about the Math Placement Test or to take the Math Placement Test please visit the Math Department website.
Advanced Placement (AP) Tests and International Baccalaureate (IB) Examination
If you have taken an AP or IB exam for any high school classes and you would like to receive college credit for those classes, you must have your official scores sent to the UT Arlington Testing Services Office. You must also apply to have the credit placed on your transcript, which should be done at the beginning of your first semester by completing the Petiton for Credit in your MyMav account. If you have received your AP or IB scores by the time you come to orientation, please bring a copy of the scores with you so you may be advised appropriately. If you have not received your scores when you come to orientation, please discuss your examinations with your advisor so that he or she is aware of your intent to have AP or IB credit applied toward a particular class.
