The state of Texas and UT Arlington have certain requirements that must be met before students can enroll in classes. All testing requirements should be completed before attending orientation to ensure no delays when registering for classes. Please see below for more details on the specific testing requirements.
Texas Success Initiative (TSI)
All students are required to complete the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) prior to attending orientation, as stipulated by the State of Texas. If this requirement is not complete you will be unable to register for classes at orientation. Students may satisfy this requirement with scores from ACT, SAT, TAKS, and/or STAAR tests. Previous college credit is also considered. Students can verify their TSI status in MyMav. Just click on the TSI Status link at the very bottom of your Student Center under the Admissions bar. If you have questions about your TSI status please visit the TSI website or email the University Advising Center at firstname.lastname@example.org.
If you need to take the TSI Assessment test and live in the DFW area, please register with UT Arlington Testing Services. If you live outside of the DFW area, please e-mail Testing Services at email@example.com for the option to take the TSI Assessment Test as a remote exam. International students will need to wait until they are at UT Arlington to take the TSI Assessment test.
You will receive notice from the New Maverick Orientation office prior to attending orientation if you are registered but have not satisfied the TSI requirement.
Math PLACEMENT Test
UT Arlington utilizes a testing program to determine your appropriate math placement, as correct placement increases your chances of success in math. Please see below for more information about who should take the Math Placement Test before attending orientation.
Students do not need to take the Math Placement Test if:
- TSI Complete and will be enrolling in the following classes: Math 1301, Math 1302, Math 1308, Math 1325
- Will be transferring in a college algebra class or higher from a previous institution or dual credit
Students must take the Math Placement Test before orientation if:
- TSI Complete and would like to enroll in a class higher than Math 1325 (college algebra)
For more information about the Math Placement Test or to take the Math Placement Test please visit the Math Department website.
Advanced Placement (AP) Tests and International Baccalaureate (IB) Examination
If you have taken an AP or IB exam for any high school classes and you would like to receive college credit for those classes, you must have your official scores sent to the UT Arlington Testing Services Office. You must also apply to have the credit placed on your transcript, which should be done at the beginning of your first semester by completing the Petiton for Credit in your MyMav account. If you have received your AP or IB scores by the time you come to orientation, please bring a copy of the scores with you so you may be advised appropriately. If you have not received your scores when you come to orientation, please discuss your examinations with your advisor so that he or she is aware of your intent to have AP or IB credit applied toward a particular class.
