Classical Studies Program

The University of Texas at Arlington

Courses in Classical Studies provide good preparation for graduate and professional schools and for careers that require clear thinking, breadth of vision, and the ability to read critically and write cogently. People who study the Classics will GAIN A SENSE OF HISTORY. "The sufferings which revolution entailed upon the cities were many and terrible, such as have occurred and always will occur, as long as the nature of mankind remains the same..." So wrote Thucydides 2400 years ago in his Peloponnesian War, a book Henry Kissinger studied avidly when forming American foreign policy.

UNDERSTAND THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. Students show marked improvement in writing, vocabulary, and ability to comprehend and analyze texts.

UNDERSTAND OUR OWN CULTURE. One has only to look at our Constitution, or a dollar bill, or the Capitol building, to see that America is a direct descendant of the Greeks and Romans. Those interested in the Bible should remember that the events of the New Testament, which was written in Greek, took place under the Roman Empire.

ENJOY THE BEAUTY OF ANCIENT ART AND LITERATURE. Nothing can compare with the mosaics of Pompeii or the poems of Homer and Virgil.
